4 slices of cheese (American, cheddar, or your choice)
Sliced red onions
Ketchup and mustard (or your favorite condiments)
Butter or oil for toasting buns
Prepare the Patties:
In a mixing bowl, gently combine the ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder (if using). Be careful not to overwork the meat to keep the burgers tender.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty. Make them slightly larger than the hamburger buns since they’ll shrink a bit during cooking. Create an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent them from puffing up as they cook.
Preheat your grill or stovetop skillet over medium-high heat.
Cook the Patties:
If grilling, oil the grates and place the patties on the grill. Cook for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare or longer for your desired level of doneness. Add a slice of cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt it.
If using a skillet, add a little oil to the pan and heat it over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for the same amount of time as mentioned above, adding the cheese as well.
Toast the Buns:
While the patties are cooking, split the hamburger buns and lightly butter the cut sides. You can also use a little oil if you prefer. Toast them in a separate skillet or on the grill until they’re golden brown.
Assemble the Burgers:
Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun.
Add a cooked patty with melted cheese on top of the lettuce.
Layer on sliced tomatoes, red onions, and pickles.
Spread ketchup and mustard (or your preferred condiments) on the top half of the buns.
Place the top bun on the assembled ingredients to complete the burger.
Serve and Enjoy:
Your classic beef burgers are now ready to be served! You can serve them with your favorite side dishes like fries, coleslaw, or a salad.
